About
Xflexhydro is a renewable energy company specializing in Hydro, Energy Storage.
XFLEXHYDRO is a major European energy innovation initiative funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 programme (grant agreement No 857832) that explores means to expand the flexibility of hydropower plants and increase their contribution to the energy transition. Over 4 years, 19 pioneering organisations in the energy sector—including utilities, equipment manufacturers, universities, research centres, and consultancies—studied and demonstrated how existing hydropower plants can be upgraded with advanced software solutions and modest technological improvements to provide enhanced grid services. The project focuses on enabling hydropower plants to deliver fast frequency control, rapid start/stop capabilities, fast transition between generating and pumping modes, high ramping rates, and inertia emulation. Real-life demonstrations were conducted across multiple European hydropower sites including Vogelgrun (France/Germany), Frades 2 (Portugal), Alto Lindoso and Caniçada (Portugal), GrandMaison (France), ZMutt (Switzerland), and Alqueva (Portugal), testing innovations such as battery energy storage system hybridization, hydraulic short circuit technology, and AI-enhanced turbine simulation.
