The Botanische Tuin Zuidas is a public botanic garden run by a foundation in Buitenveldert, Amsterdam, behind the VU medical centre. Founded in 1967 as the Hortus Botanicus of the Vrije Universiteit for education and research, it holds a plant collection of over 6,000 species and hybrids across about one hectare. Highlights include the largest cactus and succulent collection in the Netherlands, which is part of the Nationale Plantencollectie, a Chinese penjing garden, a bonsai collection, woodland, aster and australian plant sections, and greenhouses with varied climates. The garden is free to enter on weekdays and is open to the public at weekends from April to October. It is maintained by staff and volunteers, and it hosts a shop with a terrace, guided tours, plant markets, lunch concerts, Japanese day events and workshops. The garden also rents its winter garden and grounds for private and corporate events, weddings and photo shoots, with rental income supporting its upkeep. Friends and donors support the garden through membership and tree adoption schemes.
