About

Dutch&Detained is a charity based in Amsterdam, Netherlands working on justice & legal aid, human rights.

Dutch&Detained is a Dutch foundation that provides free, independent legal support to Dutch nationals detained abroad. It helps assess each detainee's legal needs after an intake interview, clarifies criminal procedures, gathers legal documentation from the Netherlands, and supports requests such as transfer of sentence, travel-ban lifting and other forms of early release. It cannot act as a lawyer abroad, so it helps detainees find local lawyers and works alongside them. The foundation receives a subsidy from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1 January 2026 it provides assistance worldwide, having previously worked only in designated countries. Its staff focus on specific regions, including the United States, Asia, the Middle East, the Balkans, the United Kingdom and Latin America, and it handles cases involving the death penalty. Contact is confidential, and information is shared with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Dutch Probation Service and Epafras Foundation only where needed to protect a detainee's interests.
