It was founded in 1968 as part of a broader movement for a fairer distribution of wealth, and was originally known as XminY (X-Y campaign) before its 2018 renaming. Funding decisions are made by volunteer sections and peer reviewers with direct regional connections, and money goes directly to action groups without intermediaries. The fund supports campaigns on climate, feminism, anti-racism, land rights, labour rights, LGBTQ+ rights, and political prisoners, and accepts applications from anywhere in the world, with separate standard and emergency application routes. It is funded mainly by individual donors and states that it remains independent of companies and governments.
