About
Founded in 1984, Joodse Begraafplaats s-Gravenhage is a foundation based in Den Haag, Netherlands working on heritage, community development.
The Foundation for the Preservation of the Jewish Cemetery in The Hague maintains the Old Jewish Cemetery at the Scheveningseweg, a national monument founded in 1694 and taken out of full service in 1906. The cemetery holds around 2,860 surviving horizontal tombstones inscribed in Portuguese, Spanish and Hebrew, along with a pre-burial house and caretaker's dwelling. The foundation was established in 1984 to halt decay, carried out a major restoration in 1987 and 1988, and continues to fund mowing, tree care, wall repairs and gravestone restoration, relying on donations and subsidies. It also documents the graves, provides a searchable name register, runs guided visits by appointment, and offers a walking route with stories about notable people buried there, both on site and virtually. The foundation holds ANBI status, and its board is unpaid.
