About
Founded in 1996, Movies that Matter is a charity based in Amsterdam, Netherlands working on human rights, arts & culture, education +1 more.
Movies that Matter is a Dutch foundation (stichting) that uses film to raise awareness of human rights and social justice and to encourage discussion about these issues. Its best-known activity is the annual Movies that Matter Festival, held in The Hague, which presents feature films and documentaries combined with Q&As, debates and talk programmes. The organisation also runs year-round screenings in cinemas across the Netherlands through its On Tour programme, and organises film screenings and educational programmes for secondary and vocational school pupils and students. Internationally, it supports film festivals and mobile cinema projects in countries where human rights and press freedom are restricted, through grants, workshops, training and advice. The foundation began in 1996 as the Amnesty International Film Festival in Amsterdam, became independent in 2006, and moved the festival to The Hague in 2009. It holds ANBI status in the Netherlands, so donations are tax-deductible under conditions.
