About
CDR VELILLA is a private headquartered in Ponferrada, Spain specializing in Hydro, Energy Storage.
CDR VELILLA is a pure reversible wastewater treatment plant (P-PHES) located in the province of León, Spain, between Velilla, Guardo, and Valderrueda. The facility will pump water from a lower reservoir to an upper reservoir during off-peak hours or when renewable energy surpluses exist. During peak demand, stored water will be turbined back to generate electricity. The plant has an installed capacity of 143.81 MW and incorporates a patented process combining large-scale energy storage with treatment of acid mine drainage (AMD) from abandoned mining sites. This dual functionality addresses both energy flexibility needs and environmental remediation. The project is recognized as a European project of interest for electrical storage by ENTSO-E and provides significant social and environmental benefits to traditional mining regions undergoing energy transition.
