Hydropower Europe is a consortium-based initiative coordinated by ICOLD (International Commission on Large Dams) and funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 826010. The initiative comprises 8 core partners with support from 70 additional organisations across Europe. It functions as the European Technology and Innovation Platform (ETIP) for hydropower, serving as a permanent voice for the hydropower community. The initiative conducts extensive stakeholder consultation, regional workshops, and technical analysis to develop a comprehensive Research and Innovation Agenda and Strategic Industry Roadmap for the hydropower sector. It addresses key challenges including climate change impacts on water availability, fish protection, river ecosystem restoration, dam flexibility for grid stability, and the integration of hydropower with variable renewable sources like wind and solar. With approximately 230 GW of installed capacity generating nearly 650 TWh annually in Europe, Hydropower Europe focuses on tapping remaining untapped hydropower potential while ensuring environmental sustainability and social acceptance.
